From St. Theresa of Avila Parish:
In 1882, New Orleans mourned the death of Margaret Haughery, who had worked devotedly with Sister Regis to improve the life of orphans.
She had used her income from selling milk and from the D'Aquin Steam Bakery to help the New Orleans Female Asylum and
St. Vincent's Infant Asylum, as well as other orphanages in the city. Upon her death, citizens began to collect funds to erect a monument in her honor,
and the Sisters of Charity donated the triangle of ground in front of the asylum. There, in 1884, the first monument to a woman in the South,
depicting her in her characteristic pose as she sat on a chair, and orphan on her knee, was erected.
